Superdoodle

I have teamed up with illustrator-extraordinaire Billmund to form Superdoodle, a cracking little creative production company based in Bristol. We aim to help people bring their stories to glorious technicolour through illustration, animation and design.

Superdoodle will initially be available for illustration work only; I’m afraid the animation department will be on hiatus for a while as I’m on maternity leave – the birth of my first child is expected in just under a week. I’ll be taking time away from my work and learning how to look after a teeny human!

Although Superdoodle will have a team of talented animators in the future, we won’t be taking on projects until I can afford the time to oversee any work completed.

In the meantime, check out the website at www.superdoodle.co and read about our work process.

Here’s a showreel to show you examples of what we can create!

Be Right Back

I’ve been very busy for the last month on a super secret project, and I’m excited to say that I can share it with you this week.

I was contacted by director Maura Axelrod, who has made a documentary about the artist Maurizio Cattelan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurizio_Cattelan). Maura needed a few snippets of animation for the documentary, to bring to life some of the stories that were never documented/filmed.

I got some of the Superdoodle team on board for this project; initial illustrations/designs/ideas by me, about 5 minutes of animation by the brill Kim Alexander and myself, and some extra character design work from Bill Mund. It’s been really fun!

Be Right Back

This week has been especially exciting as we’ve had the great news that the documentary will be premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, screening at the Guggenheim Museum in New York this April.

The information about the documentary is at the Tribeca website here: https://tribecafilm.com/stories/tribeca-film-festival-2016-lineup-midnight-spotlight-special-screenings and reads as follows:

Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back, directed and written by Maura Axelrod (USA) – World Premiere, Documentary. An art world upstart, provocative and elusive artist Maurizio Cattelan made his career on playful and subversive works that send up the artistic establishment, until a retrospective at the Guggenheim in 2011 finally solidified his place in the contemporary art canon. Axelrod’s equally playful profile leaves no stone unturned in trying tofigure out: who is Maurizio Cattelan?

Here’s the fourth in the series of animations I’ve been making for Happify. This one has been narrated by meditation teacher and author Sharon Salzberg.

Huge thanks to Kim Alexander (http://www.kimalexander.co.uk/) who did heaps of work on this project (and helped me progress through some horrendous weeks of morning sickness!), and also to Lucy Izzard (http://www.lucyizzard.co.uk/) for her support too.

I’m having a pause on Happify work for now… I’m just starting work on a completely different kind of project – more info soon.

Hope you enjoy this one!

Ta-da! Here’s animation #3 for Happify – this one covering the subject of mindfulness, and how practicing mindfulness could be one of the single most powerful things you can do for your wellbeing. Aaaaaand it has unicorns and rainbows in it! And mice and hedgehogs… what’s not to like?!

As with all of my work, this animation was created by drawing pen on paper. Each illustration was scanned, cleaned and coloured in Photoshop and then composited in After Effects.

Melting hedgehog

I became a real grown up for this project and hired an assistant to help out with the last 40 seconds of animation so I want to give a big shout out to Kim http://www.kimalexander.co.uk/ for all her hard graft. She’s been great to work with and has an amazing skill for flow and fluidity with character movement. THANKS KIM!!

We’re already working together on the fourth animation for Happify, which should be out at the end of this month or early Jan.

This is the second animation I’ve created for Happify – this one covering the subject of compassion and how we should all learn to pay attention to the people around us.

As with all of my work, this animation was created by drawing pen on paper. Each illustration was scanned, cleaned and coloured in Photoshop and then composited in After Effects.

It was a fun little project. I’ve been commissioned to create five animations for Happify – three which will be launched publicly so I’ll update you with the next one when it’s ready!

New animation!

Here’s one for the kids. And the grown up kids.

Today is the perfect day for an adventure.

This is a music video I was commissioned to make for JJ Heller‘s song “Meant To Be”.

JJ and her husband Dave got in touch as they wanted a music video made in time for the release of their new album.  The opening request was “The words that we’d love associated with the video are charming, clever and adorable. We’d love it to: 1) be the kind of video that is hard to turn away from because it’s so much fun to keep watching. 2) insert humour as much as we can. 3) for children to enjoy watching as much as adults.”

JJ and Dave had a pre-prepared script and were eager to chat through ideas with me. Initially they had written a story about two foxes but we agreed to change them to be squirrels as one of my recent videos “The Power Of Empathy” had featured a fox (so it was nice to do something different!) – plus we agreed that the idea of these characters living in a big tree house in the woods would be super fun!

After a few minor tweaks to the script, I began by designing the characters. Then on to colour choices…

Squirrel character designs

The animation was hand-drawn, pen on paper, and cleaned and coloured digitally. There’s 1150 individual illustrations in total (let alone layered Photoshop files).

I was in full head-down-work-work-work mode, and clearly wasn’t paying my dog enough attention.

Gypsy and drawings

The video took 32 days to create and it was a pleasure working with JJ and Dave.

You can get the song “Meant To Be” instantly on iTunes when you pre-order JJ Heller’s album “Sound of a Living Heart” for just $8.99 at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sound-of-a-living-heart/id1005228086.

You can also order the CD from shop.jjheller.com.

The new record releases on 21/08/15.
